This was taken yesterday as we were going on a drive in the golf cart.
Yesterday I was able to spend the day with my Grandad. Normally, when I go see my grandparents I spend the day shopping with my Granny. But not this time. This time I didn't even see Granny.
In the previous post I asked if you had any stories to share about your grandpas, and said I would share mine today. I had a good two hours to think about my favorite stories, and on the way home I reflected on my day.
Back in the day Grandad would let me drive. I thought I was driving I am sure. He would put me on his lap, and off to get ice cream we would go. I'm sure I looked just like Danica as I gripped that steering wheel, and took those curves like a pro. I was probably 4 or 5. Wow, times have changed. These days, letting a child "drive" like that on public streets could probably land them in some deep do do.
He let us jump on his king size waterbed, slide down the stairs on our stomachs, and put protien powder on our ice cream. I would still do that to this day if I could get the original Shaklee Chocolate Protein Powder.
Those are just a few of my favorite times with Grandad while I was small.
I lived with my grandparents for a little while. During that time my Granny went on a trip, and left Grandad and I alone to fend for ourselves. No biggie, except for the fact that I thought Grandad was having a heart attack. He refused to go to the hospital, and I refused to let him die on my watch. He was pretty healthy back then.
After resting in his recliner for a little while he asked me to get the medical encyclopedia/dictionary for him. I gave it to him, and within 5 minutes he was asking me to take him to the Emergency Room. This time I was really driving like Danica, weaving in and out of traffic across town to the hospital. We arrived safely, got him into a room, and then he had to get undressed and put on the hospital gown. And he needed help. What?!? I really didn't want to see my Grandad nekkid. Sorry, Grandad! Luckily, Grandad didn't want me to see him nekkid either. He left his tighty whitey's on. :)
He did not have a heart attack, and we went home. But I felt so much better knowing we had him checked out.
Yesterday I was able to have some fun with Grandad. We had lunch with my Uncle, and then headed to the house to watch the Chilean miners being rescued. We watched lots of miners come out of that mine.
We talked some politics, and watched Glenn Beck.
Grandad apologized for being such a boring guy. He had no clue that all I wanted was be in his presence. I just wanted to hang with him, and see what he does all day. He eats, sleeps, watches tv, and then does it all over again.
He must have been sitting there thinking about how he could entertain me, because after a few minutes he asked if I wanted to go see where our family friends are going to build their new house. I asked him if we should drive, and he said, "We're taking the golf cart." The golf cart is the only thing that he is allowed to drive, well that and the lawn mower.
We took off down the driveway, into the yard, and down the road. He showed me where they would be building their house, and then we headed back in the direction of the house. Before we got to the house he asked me if I knew where our friend, Janice, lives. I told him that I didn't, and off we went. He stopped at the stop sign, and looked both ways. While we were stopped I looked at him and asked if we were supposed to do this, and a wonderfully ornery grin spread across his face. "We won't get in trouble if we don't get caught," he said as he punched the accelerator. We scooted right through the intersection, and down the road to Janice's house. That was the best golf cart ride of my life.
On our way to supper, I asked him what kind of music he used to listen to and he sang to me. He sang...
I'm looking over a four-leaf clover
That I overlooked before.
One leaf is sunshine, the second is rain,
Third is the roses that grow in the lane.
No need explaining, the one remaining
Is somebody I adore.
I'm looking over a four-leaf clover
That I overlooked before.
I had a great day with my Grandad. It was a day that I will never forget.
