Rojo Salty Doc aka Sam

IMG_2103
McD has a new baby.  Well, he isn't really a baby, he is 8 years old.

He doesn't look real slick because he has allergies. He looks pretty good here, when we got him he was pretty bumpy.  I thought about calling him Lumpy.  :)  He is finally settling in and is fitting in with the others.

He is very curious.  This is what he does when I am standing there trying to take his picture.
IMG_2100

He just keeps coming straight at me.  He is such a mess.  IMG_2106
Here he is doing it again.

Finally, he is preoccupied.

You will be seeing more of Sam, I am sure of it.

Foot Rot

IMG_1977

Could you imagine the skin between your toes swelling so bad that you could barely walk?  Well, that is what happened to our #205.  One evening I was on the phone with Muncy, at this point I can't remember what we were talking about but I am sure it was important, when I watched #205 hobble across the drive.  I yanked McD off the bicycle, bringing his workout to a halt, and took him straight to her to check her out.   I wouldn't have had a clue what was wrong.  For all I knew she had broken her leg, but McD knew what it was as soon as he saw it, and we got her in and doctored her right away.

This photo is of poor #205's hoof.  That poor girl has been standing in the pond a little too long, and this is what has happened.  She has foot rot.  Well, I say "has foot rot" but the swelling has gone down and she is walking much, much better now.

The Babe

The Babe.
Babeb

Yesterday I mentioned when she was stuck in the mud. This horse is a mess. When I first started blogging she had poked herself in the eye with something and had to wear a Victoria Secret's bra, my bra no less. Talk about sacrifice, I had to cut a cup out of my black VS bra and strap it on her head every day for almost two weeks. She didn't like it too much, but we all dealt with it. Go here to see her in a bra.

Spring = New Life

Spring around here always equals new life.

Newbaby2
This was right after this calf was born, can ya tell?  Oh how I love seeing all the new babies.  :)

Newbaby1
As I was trying to get closer to him I guess I interrupted him.  He was looking for a teet.  Just look at that face.  His Momma must be so proud.  :)

Newbaby
Oh, oh, there it is.  He found it.  YEA!  If I would have taken more photos you would have seen his tail wagging.  But I felt like I should let him eat in peace.

These were taken a few weeks ago, we only have a few more cows to calve this Spring.  It is so much fun to watch these little boogers grown.  They are cute and sometimes ornery, but always good entertainment.

(Tomorrow is more of Me & McD.)

One Mean Momma

51

See this cow?  She is One Mean Momma, aka #51.  Well, she is just overly protective, but that can be construed as mean if you are the one she is charging.

One day I was taking photos of McD doing feeding the cows and I thought to myself, you know it would be nice to have someone taking my photo while I feed, etc.  Then a few days later McD and I had just finished feeding and this crazy cow decides that I am too close to her baby.  Keep in mind I was no where near her baby.  We have now determined that it doesn't really matter whose baby you are close to, she is going to protect it from the mean people that actually feed her.

It happened as I was walking back to the barn.  I heard her snort and I glanced up to see her walking toward me kind of slow like.  I am pretty comfortable around the cattle so I was not to concerned with her approaching me.  Then she lowered her head and charged me.  I screamed for McD, but he didn't hear me.  So, I screamed even louder as I hit the gate behind me.  That is about the time McD realized I might be in some trouble.  But by that time I had scared her more than she scared me and I was walking to the barn.

That is when I realized that I am pretty happy no one was there to catch that on film, or um camera (since everything is pretty much digital now).  I came away from it all okay, just a little bruising of my behind and my ego but other than that I am fine.

A couple of days later I was out taking photos around the lot, there just happened to be a few cows and calves laying around - one was even having a baby.  All I wanted to do was get photos of the newborn, but instead I was trying to stay away from #51, aka One Mean Momma.

Memories

178766325_c9192d6657

What is he telling her?  There is no telling with the ornery look in McD's eye, but whatever it is you can tell she is listening.  She always listened.  This is one of my favorite photos of McD & Ruby.

Some of you might have noticed that I didn't blog this weekend.  It was a rough weekend.  All we have now are our memories of her.

Rest in Peace Ruby.

Horses & Their Habits

Our horses are hilarious.  Yesterday I had the privilege to feed them and watch their antics.  McD was out of town so I got to do all the feeding and taking care of the animals.

It started at 3 am.  For some reason Mordecai thought he needed attention at 3 o'clock in the morning.  Sheesh!  He jumped on the bed and began meowing very loud.  He climbed on my chest and kept meowing.  Man I love that cat.  I tried to just pet him but he wanted me to get up, and of course we have to do whatever he wants.  He is king of the house.  I dragged myself out of bed and proceeded to ask him what he wanted, believe it or not he will answer me.  He didn't want food, I tried that.  He didn't want outside, I tried that too.  He just wanted someone up with him to pay attention to him.  I sure showed him, I went back to bed.  He's over it now.

At 4 am, all the cows came up.  That wouldn't have bothered me except Mia & Hoss started barking at them and the cows mooed right back at them.  No wonder I couldn't quit yawning yesterday.  I just yelled at them to shut it and then I went back to sleep.

At 5:45 am the horses showed up.  That is their first habit.  How in the world do they know what time it is?  I don't know, but they do.  Every morning we have to put the horses in the lot because they are curious and their hineys seem to itch a lot.  The people coming to work on the house have no clue what these horses could and would do to their vehicles.  They don't really mean to tear anything up.  They just want to taste their vehicles, because you know Fords, Chevys, GMCs, Dodges, and Toyotas all have a their own unique taste.  Our guys & girls are tired of our Ford and GMCs.  After they taste the vehicles they like to scratch their hineys on them.  They don't usually scratch before tasting, but I wouldn't put it past them.  That is why we lock them up all day long.  But keep in mind, they ask for it.  They come up every morning at about 5:45 - 6 am, just asking for it.

When we go out to the barn this is how it works. Every.single.morning.

They enter through one gate and I go through one at the barn.  While I am getting the feed Hickory stands at the adjoining gate encouraging me to hurry it up by hitting the gate either with his head or his feet.  When I bring the bucket of feed in the pens he guards me as I make my way to his pen.  He doesn't want anyone else to get the first scoop, cause it's the best.  After I put the feed in his feeder, he has to scoop some of it out.  I don't know why, but he does it every.single.time.

By this time Babe has made her way over to me and the bucket.  I close Hickory's pen and Babe is on my tail.  I get her fed, close her pen and turn to take care of Ruby.

Ruby is always, always the first one in her pen.  She gets in there as soon as she comes in the gate.  Then she waits patiently. She is such a good horse.

Dandy is always fed last, he is the low horse on the horsey totem pole.  By the time I am getting to Ruby he is pacing the pens.  He paces them at least three times and then he goes into his pen.  If I don't get his feed in his feeder fast enough he tells me about it by pawing the ground.   He is the slowest eater.  Sheesh!

Dandy might be the last to be fed, but he is the first to be let out of his pen.  This means he is the first one in the lot and to the water.  Then it's Ruby.  If Dandy doesn't stop to eat the feed Hickory scoops out then Ruby goes for it.  Next, we let Babe out.  She is a character.  She just stands there and rarely comes out of her pen right away.  I think she must be napping.  Then we let the big guy out, Hickory.  He is the lead horse.  He is the dominant one.  It is irritating sometimes, but that is the way it is.

That is our morning routine.  Every. Morning.

The Girls of the 2DB Cattle Co.

Occasionally when we are out checking cattle I have these strange ideas.  On this particular day I decided that the cows (girls) have unique hairstyles.  These are just a few of their winter dos.

Hair1
This is one wild woman.   Her hairstyle kind of reminds me of a guy we know.  We will call this style the "comb forward."  This guy, we'll call him Bell-Boy, he is just almost bald but he can't accept it.  He has this little tuft of hair that is always combed forward.  I just want to hold him down and shave his head.

Hair2
She had just winked at me, that is why her eye looks like that.  :)

Hair3
Mohawk?  Or just a spikey look?  I wonder how she gets it to stand up that way...

Hair4
This hairstyle is quite interesting from day to day.  She has curls, but she also has straight bangs.  She is one of the cows that thinks I should feed her by hand.

Hair5
The Wave.  You know how much money I would have to pay for a wave like that?  A lot!  And her's doesn't get all frizzy when its humid.  Lucky Girl!

Hair6
Okay, who was it that had hair like this?

Hair7
This is just kinky.  Rows!  Ha!  This is actually one of the boys, he has rows!  Oh I am cracking myself up!

Hair8
I think there is a layering problem here.  She needs a new stylist.

Well, hope you got a kick out of these girls and their dos.  Summer dos to follow...one of these days.

Bovine Babes - T & A

Fimg_5832

Teets & A$$ that is...

Look at that face!  Gorgeous I tell ya!  #2 has been chosen for the cover of Bovine Babes.  She is one HOT Mama!  She loves 20% cubes and will eat them right out of your hand.  She loves to graze on the wheat and hang out by the pond all day long.

Bimg_0246
The Bovine Babes centerfold is none other than #48.  She keeps her hooves naturally polished, just look at the shine.  Gaze your eyes upon her delicate, ummm, ankle and right up to her long lean leg.

Bimg_0247
Oh what a nicely filled udder, and check out those teets.  They are full are ready to be sucked.

Bimg_0249
Because of this photo #48 did not want to show her face.  She wants to keep her private life all her own.  Her teets are nice and full, just waiting for a special someone.

Bimg_0251

You should see her shake her thang when she walks.  It drives all the Bulls wild!

Hickory Dickory Dock

No, not the nursery rhyme, one of our horses.

Bhickory1
Hickory is the dominant horse.

It is funny how there are dominant animals, people, etc.  He is a beauty though.

Sorry this is short and sweet, but we are hitting the road for yet another funeral.  This is really insane.  All of the funeral hopping has made me realize that I have photos of all sorts of things, like Hickory, but not enough of the people I love.  I hope everyone takes at least one photo of someone they love this weekend.  Let me know if you do.  I will be blog surfing this weekend and hope to see some of the photos.
